  • 1. How many square metres in a 2-tonne van?

Around 4.5 m2 but it depends on the van’s exact dimension. Let’s assume the van is 3 metres long and 1.5 metres wide (much like a 2-tonne Toyota Hiace). To work out the square metres, times length by width: 3 m x 1.5 m = 4.5 m2.

Note that square metres are a two-dimensional measurement, meaning it only covers floor space or area. If you’re calculating van capacity because you’re moving, cubic metres (length x width x height) can also give you an indication of the available volume.

  • 2. How many square metres in a 4-tonne van?

It depends on the vehicle’s dimensions. For example, a 4-tonne transit vehicle with a length of 4.2 m and a width of 2.3 m has 9.66 square metres.
Note that 4-tonne vans are relatively uncommon, especially in use as moving trucks. You’re far more likely to encounter 4 or 5-tonne moving trucks. We’ve got more information on truck sizes for your move here.

  • 3. How many square metres in a 10.4-tonne van?

There are no 10.4-tonne vans, but there are 10.4-tonne trucks. The square metres in a truck of this size are dictated by dimensions. To calculate square metres, times the vehicle’s length by its width. For example, let’s say you have a 10.4-tonne truck that’s 6 m long by 3 m wide, 6 x 3 = 18, so the truck has 18 m2.

  • ?4. What size moving truck do I need for a 2-bedroom apartment?

A 4-tonne truck is a suitable choice for most 2-bedroom apartments, that’s assuming you’re moving the content of both bedrooms, a kitchen, living room, and a bathroom. If you have large or awkward-shaped furniture, for example, a large L-shape sofa, you might need to go up a truck size.

  • 5. What size moving truck do I need for a 4-bedroom house?

We recommend a 10 or 12-tonne truck for larger moves, such as a 4-bedroom house. Which size you need out of these two options comes down to how much furniture and other belongings you have. If you’re unsure, or you’d like extra advice on truck sizes, call HomeMove on 03 9077 3120.

  • 6. How do I know what size moving truck I need?

There are a few ways to work this out. You can base your truck needs on the size of your home, e.g., a smaller 2-bedroom house can generally be moved with a 4-tonne truck while a larger 3-bedroom home usually requires a 10-tonne truck. This varies from home to home, of course, so many people prefer to use a dedicated moving truck calculator to estimate their requirements. Alternatively, you can contact removalists for quotes based on the required truck size and your home.

  • 7. What size moving truck should I get for a 3-bedroom house?

An 8 or 10-tonne moving truck is a standard choice for a 3-bedroom home. Because these trucks offer plenty of room, they’re easy to pack, helping to expedite the process and save you money. Their height, which is usually just shy of 3 metres, also means plenty of space for tall items such as bookshelves to be packed standing up.

  • 10. What sizes are removal trucks in Australia?

Sizes range from smaller removalist vans right up to 12-tonne removal trucks. In between, you can find 3, 4, 5, 8, and 10-tonne trucks. The truck size you need for your move is dependent on how much furniture and belongings you’re moving.
An easy way to estimate this is based on the number of rooms in your house, for example, a 5-tonne truck is a good choice for most 2-bedroom houses. However, it’s not an exact way to calculate the truck size needed as some people have more things than others. Try our moving truck calculator for a better estimation.

  • 11.How much can I fit in a 6-tonne moving truck?

The contents of an average 2-bedroom home fit comfortably in a 6-tonne truck. However, this depends on how full your home is with furniture and belongings. You may, for instance, only need a 4-tonne moving truck. If you’re unsure whether a 6-tonne truck is right for your move, please get in touch with our experts.

  • 12. What is the standard moving truck size?

It depends. Four-tonne moving trucks are commonly used for 2-bedroom houses and apartments, while 10-tonne trucks are used for larger 3 and 4-bedroom homes. If you have a small studio apartment, a removalist van might be all you need but if you have a 5-bedroom home and a grand piano, you might need a 12-tonne truck.

Standards vary because people have varied levels of furniture and belongings. However, removalist vans and 4 and 10-tonne trucks are common choices in Australia.

  • 13. What is the biggest moving truck size in Australia?

Both 12 and 13-tonne moving trucks are at the higher end of the scale. Most 3 and 4-bedroom homes require a 10-tonne truck, for example. So if you’re moving the contents of a 5-bedroom house or moving a business, you may need these larger vehicles.

  • 14. What size moving truck do I need for a 1-bedroom apartment?

Depending on how much furniture you have, you may only need a removalist van. If this is too small for your needs, the next best size option for a 1-bedroom apartment is either two vans or a 4-tonne truck. Use our intuitive moving truck calculator to gauge the size of truck you’ll need for your move.

  • 15. What is a moving truck size estimator?
